book by Crystal Skillman
Based on Adam Elliot's film, MARY & MAX
13-year old Lily has locked herself in her room. Her newly single father chooses to finally tell Lily the story of Mary and Max, a tale set in the 1970s about a seemingly random friendship between Mary Daisy Dinkle, a chubby and lonely eight-year-old with a birthmark on her forehead the color of poo who lives in Australia and Max Jerry Horowitz, a 44-year-old obese New Yorker who is soon diagnosed with a newly named disorder, Asperger Syndrome. As pen-pals, they go through their highest and lowest times together, spanning twenty years. But, will Lily see Mary and Max meet before it's too late?
ABOUT
"And it may open a new musical era. Because what is offered here for eyes, ears and heart is a musical, but so atypically different, refreshingly modern - just authentic."

"Given his songwriting prowess, this show
can't land in
New York soon enough!"
- Stephen Mother, Broadwayworld.com
“This [Mary and Max] has
restored my faith in theatre…
I love the score.”
-Mr. Fab, Immrfabulous.com
“...brilliantly reflected [ in the ] composition of Bobby Cronin, is heartbreaking as well as heartwarming and it is very much surprising how much you feel, suffer and laugh with these odd characters. I am looking forward to having Mary and Max in our theatre taking audiences into their world, a humorous-melancholy parable of the beauty and ugliness of life.”
- Playbill
"a love letter to marginalized people everywhere regardless of age, sex or culture.”
— Calgary Herald
“It's a high spirited, totally delightful flight of fantasy”
— Calgary Herald
“Nothing accidental about Mary and Max’s success at Theatre Calgary…
A fantastic
score.
